Every production deserves a deputy Small problems deserve simple solutions
DEPUTIES ON GUEST ARTIST AND SPECIAL APPEARANCE
I'm an 11-time deputy, serving my fellow members as their conduit to the union on a variety of contracts and codes, including LORT, LOA-LORT, Transition, and NYC Showcase. It's how I got involved in Equity in the first place, and I always look forward to the meeting on the first day of rehearsal so I can raise my hand to volunteer.
So when I worked on my very first Guest Artist and Special Appearance contracts last year, I was disappointed to find that there was no language in either agreement about the election of a deputy. In both cases I was working alongside fellow members, but had no mechanism to hold an election to name a deputy and to get access to Equity's deputy portal. I wanted to change that.
When I got back to New York, I brought the issue to both the Eastern Developing Theater and the Guest Artist Agreement Committees, urging them to amend both contracts to include language that allows for the election of a deputy. Both committees agreed, and the rulebooks are now in the process of being amended.
It was a small problem, and all it required was a simple solution, and somebody with the involvement and knowhow to make the change.
